Our flagship program for aspriring health students to examine the social determinants of health and engage virtually in a sequence of clinical experiences that deliver health services to resource-limited communities in urban and rural settings in Honduras.

  • engage in real-time with doctors, pharmacists, and patients supported by advanced telemedical equipment,
  • explore details of region-specific diseases and health issues impacting individual and community health,
  • understand pharmacological practices and the application of traditional medicines,
  • learn how to conduct monitoring and evaluations in the context of a rural clinic,
  • develop and deliver educational services to patients, and
  • work to develop intercultural competencies throughout the course.

Medical Program Learning Objectives
Students that successfully complete the program will be able to:

  • Explain how the social determinants of health impact the lives of people in rural and urban communities in a developing country.
  • Understand the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of common diseases identified in urban and rural clinics that utilize telemedical equipment.
  • Explain to the patient the proper use of medications, adverse drug reactions, and drug interactions of medications prescribed.
  • Educate patients and families on prevention of infectious and chronic diseases.
  • Analyze data to monitor health trends and identify health risk factors unique to a single rural community in a developing country.

Resources provided in support of the virtual sessions and Modules

  • A bilingual, on-the-ground session facilitator will coordinate each virtual session with students.
  • A translator is provided in each virtual session in which students engage with patients and community healthcare workers. Doctors and medical staff are also bilingual.
  • Program materials are provided to all students.
  • Session scheduling that coordinates your course and our online sessions and clinics.

MODULE 1: Introductions and Organization Overview

Coordinator and student introductions along with a presentation on our parent organization Global Brigades’ (GB) health and economic development programs in Honduras. Self-paced activity: Reflect on Global Brigades’ holistic model and the advantages of an integrated community development approach.

MODULE 2: Honduran Health System and Cultural Context*

Coordinator presents on Global Brigades medical programming in the context of the Honduran medical system. Self-paced activity: Reflect on the Honduran medical system and draw parallels to your local one.

MODULE 3: Community Selection for Rural Clinic

A community selection simulation and introduction to the specific community that the rural clinic will be taking place in. Self-paced activity: Students can explore the community profile on our website by visiting www.globalbrigades.org/countries/honduras and fill out the social determinants of health worksheet.

Module 4: Community Health Worker Program*

Coordinator presents on Global Brigades’ CHW program in Honduras and how they are a resource to support primary care in remote communities around the world. Self-paced activity: Prepare questions for the Community Health Worker.

MODULE 5: Meeting a Community Health Worker*

Live meeting with a Community Health Workers (CHW) to discuss the community’s history with GB, specific community needs, and their role within the community to support continuity of care. Self-paced activity: Use the worksheet to research and compare other CHW interventions around the world.

MODULE 6: Health Workshop Preparation

A working session for the Class to prepare the health workshop that will be presented during the rural clinic. Self-paced activity: Split into classes and create workshop using templates provided.

MODULE 7: Clinic Preparation 1 – Analyzing Electronic Medical Records

Class reviews past patient data (scrubbed to be anonymous) from past rural clinics and common illnesses. Self-paced activity: Continue working on health workshops in class.

MODULE 8: Clinic Preparation 2 – Pharmacology

Coordinator presents common medication and use cases during clinics along with an introduction to traditional Honduran medicine. Self-paced activity: Class finalizes workshops.

MODULE 9: Clinic Preparation 3 – Mock Patient Consultations Using Telemedical Equipment*

Coordinator presents common medication and use cases during clinics along with an introduction to traditional Honduran medicine. Self-paced activity: Students review medical Spanish terminology worksheet.

MODULE 10-12: Urban Clinic Days*

Two sessions shadowing our Honduran doctors utilizing telemedical devices at our Urban Clinic in Tegucigalpa. Self-paced activity: Reflections and observations from urban clinic days

Module 13: Rural Clinic Day Recap*

Coordinator shares recording of the mobile rural clinic and doctor recaps with Class on most interesting epidemiological cases. Self-paced activity: Class updates social determinants of health worksheet.

MODULE 14: Cultural Celebration and Final Reflections

Class prepares a local Honduran dish and reflects on the overall experience. Discuss the many topics covered throughout the TeleSquad. Self-paced activity: Fill out the end of the squad survey. If you’re heading to college, look into existing chapters of GB on your campus!
