ABOUT US

From December 10-16, 2023, Turning Winds Academy participated in our first-ever Global Impact Squad to Belize! These dedicated students and teachers embarked on a week-long adventure filled with cultural immersion and hands-on service supporting the community of Billy White in the Cayos District of Belize.

Building Together, Growing Together:

This adventure wasn’t just about sightseeing. Students played a vital role in leaving a tangible legacy in the community. They joined forces with the local community and students to improve the community’s primary school, including painting beautiful murals on the walls of the classrooms.

Impact that Endures:

Throughout their Global Impact Squad, the Turning Winds Academy team forged deep bonds with the local community. Their dedication and teamwork made a profound difference in Billy White. The teachers spent time with the local children providing English classes while the students played games and shared joy. Additionally, the group helped pour cement to improve the main entrance to the school and began the construction of a playground. The true impact lies in the hearts of everyone involved.

Immerse in Belizean Culture:

During the Global Impact Squad, the group experienced many cultural activities including:

  • A Traditional Chocolate Making Tour, diving into the rich history and process of Mayan chocolate making, from bean to bar, alongside indigenous women of the local chocolate cooperative.
  • A visit to the Green Iguana Conservation Project, learning about the importance of protecting endangered species and participating in conservation efforts alongside local experts.
  • A tour of the awe-inspiring Xunantunich Mayan Ruins, climbing the El Castillo pyramid, and discovering the mysteries of the ancient Maya civilization.
  • A journey to the Cahal Pech Mayan Site, uncovering hidden temples and plazas bathed in the lush Belizean rainforest.
  • An immersion in the vibrant San Ignacio Market, bartering for local treasures and learning to prepare authentic Belizean dishes like fry jacks and stewed beans.

Enrich Your Spirit:

In addition to the cultural activities, Turning Winds was also able to relax and enjoy some of Belize’s most beautiful and popular tourist destinations including:

  • Floating through the crystal-clear waters of the Branch River system and Charlie’s Cave, surrounded by breathtaking cave formations and lush jungle greenery.
  • Unwinding on the pristine shores of the Caribbean Sea, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the tranquility of island life.
